If one designer truly embodies the spirit of their label, it’s Mary Katrantzou. Despite the fact she dresses almost exclusively in black, the high-impact, maximalist aesthetic of her fun-loving brand is indicative of the infectious laughter and palpable joie de vivre she is renowned for.
It’s little wonder Katrantzou has a sunny disposition – having launched her eponymous label only six years ago, the Athens-born designer is now at the helm of one of London’s fastest rising and most successful brands. With a 60-strong team and a collaboration with Adidas Originals under her belt (following in the footsteps of design greats Yohji Yamamoto and Raf Simons), last month Katrantzou also scooped the coveted British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund – a £200,000 award – signalling further expansion on the horizon.
Great designing is about being fearless, and Katrantzou’s intrepid nature was clear from an early age – at 19, she left Greece against her father’s wishes in pursuit of love in London. With no previous fashion experience, she enrolled in a textile course at Central Saint Martins and studied fashion history until she felt confident in class. Undeterred by minimalism gaining traction in the fashion industry, she blindly built her reputation on engineering hyper-real digital prints, with each collection more creatively enthralling and pioneering than the last. Then came her AW14 collection with a curveball: there was no print whatsoever. ‘When more women become aware of your brand and you evolve as a designer, you want to diversify that code and expand your vocabulary to touch different areas,’ she says. ‘I made a conscious decision to strip print off the catwalk as I wanted the focus to be elsewhere.’ Despite this volte-face, Katrantzou is resolutely confident about her change in direction, ‘It was great to feel liberated in that way. We did so much with lace, embroidery and the fabrics we created – it’s fun to move on from what I am known for and to complete a full language.’
I think an initial is a stamp of your identity. You always want to feel unique in the way you present yourself and the fashion you wear.
Her latest adventure is a project with ArtStack, an online platform for both established and breakthrough artists. In celebration of her alphabet-inspired Resort 2015 collection – based entirely on typography and letters – Katrantzou selected a series of artworks that relate, literally or conceptually, to the alphabet. As part of an exclusive collaboration with MATCHESFASHION.COM, the 26 chosen artworks have been transferred onto a collection of limited edition tote bags – each emblazoned with an initial. ‘Some are more Art Deco, some are more pop art, some are more pointillist in their rendering. I think the “M” is appropriate for MATCHESFASHION.COM and Mary Katrantzou! If I could collect all 26 and create an archive of them I would,’ she says. The Style Report learns more.
‘The whole idea began when we built our Resort collection around the idea of the alphabet. It’s something people love and I think an initial is a stamp of your identity. You always want to feel unique in the way you present yourself and the fashion you wear. When you use the alphabet in fun products, like accessories, it becomes a conversation point. It’s perfect for table-top dressing too. Some women collect all the different letters of their name so it becomes more than a product – it’s decorative.’
To a certain extent, designers are considered curators nowadays. The way we approach social media and dialogue with our customers has always been very open, and I think that draws people in – the sharing, the understanding of the collection, why it is thematic and what it represents. People want to understand your vision.
She is someone who appreciates art and design. She wants to dress in something she thinks is timeless and unique and in her own way. I want to think our woman is very confident, too. Women are more connected now, they travel so much and are aware of more brands and trends.
The way I use print has a lot to do with photorealism and surrealism. It’s not a decorative print per se, but something that turned print on its head, allowing women to wear it. Removing print from the runway doesn’t mean I don’t love print or think it isn’t a huge part of what I do.
Over the past month, Mary Katrantzou and MATCHESFASHION.COM have hosted a series of star-studded soirées from London to Texas to launch the exclusive collection of A-to-Z tote bags. Shoe designer Charlotte Dellal of label Charlotte Olympia and stylist Charlotte Stockdale showed up to give their support at London’s spectacular Wallace Collection, while in Los Angeles, the worlds of art and fashion collided as guests including Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, Liberty Ross and Michelle Monaghan gathered in the Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery for a night of A-Z fuelled celebrations.
