MY CITY MOSCOW

Olga Vilshenko, the founder and creative director of her namesake label Vilshenko, reveals her favourite spots in her home city of Moscow.

Interview by Jane McFarland.

MORNING STOP

‘I have been going to Coffeemania (coffeemania.ru/en) for years – you really can’t go wrong for a delicious breakfast. It’s my family’s go-to. Despite being super busy, especially on weekends, the service is always great and the food is amazing.’

LOCAL CUISINE

‘For an authentic Russian dinner, a favourite of mine is Café Pushkin (cafe-pushkin.ru/en), housed in a building designed to look exactly like a Russian aristocrat’s home circa 1825. My must-try is the Russian pancakes with black caviar, borscht and dumplings.’

AN ELEVATED EVENING

‘For special occasions I absolutely love The White Rabbit (whiterabbitmoscow.ru/en) which also happens to be listed in the world’s 50 best restaurants! Located on the top floor of the Smolenskaya Plaza Building, the restaurant has breathtaking views over Moscow – just incredible.’

A DREAM DAY

‘I would start the day with breakfast with my husband and three children, sitting out on the veranda, enjoying family time together followed by a leisurely stroll around the Gorky Park. In the evening, I would have dinner with my husband at Buono (en.ginza.ru/msk/restaurant/buono), a lovely restaurant located on the 29th and 30th floors of the Radisson Royal Hotel with more extraordinary panoramic views of the city, or catch a late-night movie at the Moscow Cinema (moscowcinema.com). Another great place to spend a day is the Kolomenskoye Historical and Architectural Museum and Reserve. (mgomz.com). There, you will find a beautiful apple garden, and stunning riverside and forest walks.’

SECRET SPOT

‘Moscow has more hidden gems and charming corners than you can possibly imagine! One of my favourite little secrets is a nondescript balcony, located on the perimeter of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral between the bell towers. Visit for the most unforgettable views of the Kremlin and the factory building Red October.’

HOTELS

‘With such a busy schedule, and lots of travelling I always think to myself “There is no place like home,” so I prefer to be at our house with my family when I’m in Moscow. If I were to choose though, it would be a boutique hotel such as Hotel National (national.ru), Barvikha Hotel & Spa (barvikhahotel.com/en) or the Lotte Hotel (lottehotel.com/moscow/en). A perfect evening would then be spent dancing all night long at Denis Simachev Bar (Stoleshnikov Lane, 12/2, Moscow 107031).’

GALLERY VIEW

‘My favourite museum is The State Tretyakov Gallery (tretyakovgallery.ru/en) which is walking distance from the Kremlin. The Gallery, with its focus on iconic Russian works, is a true haven for art lovers. The collection is absolutely mesmerising. Also Tsaritsyno Park (tsaritsyno-museum.ru) is really beautiful – Russian history at its best. Inside there are various galleries, as well as a lovely orangerie which is a cosy spot for tea.’
