SPOTLIGHT ON… WHITE FOR ALL SEASONS

Crisp, fresh, elegant: from evening suits to pared-back shoes, this is why white is the perfect shade to wear all year round.

Words by Georgina Lucas.

HOW TO WEAR

EVENING WHITE

Far from being confined to daywear, white comes into its own at night. For classic style, a crisp white suit will look elegant for day or evening – see Saint Laurent's satin design or single-breasted crepe by Pallas x Claire Thomson-Jonville. Seek out decorative details – a crystal button, subtle pleats or sleek fabrics will elevate the simplest styles. For ultimate impact, look to Loewe’s knitted cape; the perfect partner for a sheer white lace blouse.

THE COLLABORATION

ALBUS LUMEN X WOOLMARK

Albus Lumen’s manifesto is simple,’ says Albus Lumen founder and creative director Marina Afonina.‘To make easy work of getting dressed.’ This season, the label has won the International Woolmark Prize – an award created to promote the use of Australian merino wool in garment design. For Afonina it was a perfect match. ‘The Albus Lumen woman is looking for simplicity and understated luxury.’ Prized for its luxe texture, versatility and breathability, merino delivers exactly that. The all-white capsule collection of dresses and coats remains true to the label’s pared back aesthetic – subtle texture is introduced via linen and silk yarns and experimenting with quilting. House signatures, including shell and pearl detailing, are worked into the pieces. ‘The collection is transseasonal,’ she says. ‘It represents a sense of ease and luxury. I can see it worn in many different ways.’

The Hot 5

1. THE PARED-BACK SHOES

White shoes are the perfect way to finish an all-white look. Trainers are a safe option, or Jil Sander’s pared-back pumps are a true investment pair.

2. THE MINIMAL COAT

Embrace winter white with a wool coat. Go for a classic lapel silhouette belted over knits, shirts or floor-sweeping dresses. Loewe and Gabriela Hearst lead the way.

3. THE REWORKED SHIRT

No wardrobe can have enough white shirts, and this season designers are remixing the classic. See Stella McCartney, Palmer//Harding and a host of others for slick designs.

4. THE FOREVER KNIT

The perfect bridge between the seasons, a fresh white knit is light enough to layer on summer days, and looks modern under a coat. Take your cues from The Row and Jacquemus.

5. THE WOOL CAPE

Part knit, part coat, Gucci’s wool cape is perfect for layering. With classic details – fringing and a house-colour trim – it will look elegant for seasons to come.

THE TREND

WHITE ON WHITE

AW19 is the season of tone on tone. Select a colour and take it top-to-toe. White is fresh enough to see out the last of the sunshine, it will look bright and clean come autumn. And when winter comes? Simply add a white knit or belt over an alabaster wool coat. See Gabriela Hearst and Lemaire for workable all-white wardrobe options – sleek, elegant and quietly luxurious.

KEY PIECE

THE WHITE DRESS

As versatile as its all-black counterpart, the white dress feels modern all year round. As the weather turns colder, follow Jil Sander’s lead and opt for longline silhouettes and heavier fabrics. Layering brings wardrobe adaptability, too – pair a dress with wide-leg trousers, pull on a skinny-fit polo neck or wrap around a scarf a la Joseph. The key is to keep accessories minimal, and don’t be afraid to choose white or pale tones.
